Health & Safety Replaces OHSAS 18001 3-Year Cycle

About the standard

What is ISO 45001:2018?

ISO 45001:2018 is the international standard for occupational health and safety (OH&S) management systems. It provides a framework to improve worker safety, reduce workplace risks, and create safer working conditions. ISO 45001 replaces the earlier OHSAS 18001 standard.

The standard uses the High-Level Structure (Annex SL), enabling clean integration with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 for a combined quality, environmental, and safety management system.

Who it’s for

Any organization with workers — especially safety-sensitive operations.

ISO 45001 applies to organizations of any size and industry. Particularly common drivers include:

  • Construction, industrial services, manufacturing, and field work
  • Prime-contractor safety requirements and tender prerequisites
  • Insurance, regulatory, and workers’ compensation considerations
  • Demonstrating safety culture to customers, employees, and unions
  • Migration from legacy OHSAS 18001 certification

What the standard requires

Key clauses (4–10)

  • Context & interested parties — including workers, contractors, regulators.
  • Leadership & worker participation — top-management commitment and consultation with workers at all levels.
  • Planning — hazard identification, risk assessment, legal and other requirements, OH&S objectives.
  • Support — resources, competence, awareness, communication, documented information.
  • Operation — operational planning and control, eliminating hazards, change management, procurement, emergency preparedness.
  • Performance evaluation — monitoring, measurement, incident investigation, internal audit, management review.
  • Improvement — nonconformity and corrective action, continual improvement.

Why AmericanQMS

Safety certification, by people who understand the work.

OH&S certification only works if it reflects how work is actually done on the ground. Our auditors are experienced with industrial, field, and operational environments — the documentation we guide and the audit we conduct are grounded in real operations, not aspirational policies.

Most ISO 45001 engagements complete in 6–12 weeks. Combined audits with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 significantly reduce overall effort.
